Abuja, Nigeria — The family of the late Otunba Bamidele Akingboye has publicly distanced itself from a purported 27-member burial committee allegedly set up to solicit funds for the deceased’s funeral, describing the move as illegal and unauthorized.
In a statement signed by the widow, Mrs Christiana Akingboye, the family said its attention was drawn to reports circulating on social media regarding the formation of the committee.
The family категорically denied any involvement in the arrangement, alleging that the committee, reportedly initiated by Samuel Akingboye and Mr. Oyeniyi Iwakun, is being used as a platform to extort money from unsuspecting friends, associates, and business partners of the deceased.
“We want to state clearly that the family is not aware of and not part of this illegal arrangement,” the statement read. “We are capable of giving our late husband and father a befitting burial without soliciting funds from the general public.”
The family further emphasized that neither the widow, children, nor immediate relatives authorized any individual or group to raise funds on their behalf.
They urged the public to disregard any requests for financial contributions linked to the alleged committee, warning friends, associates, and well-wishers to exercise caution.
“We hereby dissociate ourselves completely from the said 27-member burial committee and advise the public to take note,” the statement added.
The development has raised concerns about fraudulent fundraising activities often associated with high-profile burials, prompting calls for vigilance among the public.
