The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has intensified efforts to tackle the ongoing Lassa Fever outbreak, which has claimed 190 lives in 2024.
At a media briefing in Abuja, NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, shared troubling statistics: 9,492 suspected cases, 1,154 confirmed infections, and a persistently high fatality rate exceeding 13%. He highlighted the need for urgent action, particularly in heavily affected states such as Ondo, Edo, Bauchi, Taraba, Benue, and Ebonyi.
Dr. Idris outlined several proactive measures being implemented by the NCDC, including enhanced disease surveillance, distribution of essential medical supplies, and the expansion of laboratory diagnostic facilities from nine to 13 centers nationwide. Additionally, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated to coordinate response efforts through a One Health Approach.

“While progress has been made, the current situation calls for immediate and intensified interventions,” Dr. Idris emphasized.
He also appealed to citizens and healthcare workers to maintain strict hygiene practices and adhere to infection control protocols, particularly during the festive season, when the risk of disease spread could increase.
The NCDC reaffirmed its commitment to controlling the outbreak and reducing its devastating impact on affected communities, pledging to work tirelessly toward mitigation the crisis.
