The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative, a coalition of civil society organizations, has praised the peaceful conduct of the 2024 Ondo State gubernatorial election held on November 16, 2024. The coalition lauded the people of Ondo State for their orderly participation across the 18 local government areas.
In a press statement released on Sunday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, the coalition expressed its appreciation for the peaceful turnout of voters who elected a new leader to guide the state for the next four years.
The group commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its outstanding performance in executing its duties, emphasizing that the world is closely watching as the electoral body concludes the process with the announcement of the election results.
Additionally, the coalition acknowledged the professionalism and commitment of the security agencies, which contributed significantly to maintaining peace throughout the voting process.
Media organizations and civil society observers, both local and international, were also praised for adhering to the rules of engagement and upholding global best practices in their coverage and monitoring of the election.
However, the coalition expressed concern over reports of vote buying at some polling units. While these incidents were not deemed substantial enough to undermine the overall credibility of the election, the group noted that they highlight an area that needs improvement as Nigerians strive for elections that set an exemplary standard.
The coalition urged the people of Ondo State, and Nigerians at large, to remain patient and maintain peace as they await the official announcement and declaration of results by INEC, in accordance with the law. The coalition expressed confidence in INEC’s ability to ensure that the outcome reflects the will of the electorate as expressed at the polls.
