President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Rt. Honourable Andy Burnham on his assumption of office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, expressing optimism about deepening bilateral relations between both countries.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nigeria on Tuesday, the President also commended the Government and people of the United Kingdom for what he described as a peaceful, orderly and seamless leadership transition, noting that it reflects the strength of the country’s democratic institutions and constitutional tradition.
Tinubu recalled his recent official visit to the UK in March 2026, during which he engaged with the immediate past Prime Minister, describing the interaction as productive and beneficial. He expressed confidence that Burnham would consolidate on the gains of that engagement and further strengthen cooperation between both nations.
The President emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to explore new opportunities for partnership and collaboration with the UK under the new leadership, particularly in areas of mutual interest.

He also signaled his intention to meet with the British leader at the earliest opportunity, both bilaterally and within multilateral platforms such as the Commonwealth of Nations, to advance shared priorities and address global challenges.
According to the statement, the Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the longstanding strategic relationship between Nigeria and the UK, while wishing Prime Minister Burnham a successful tenure in office.
