Nigeria and Mauritania have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral relations and strengthening strategic cooperation across key sectors, including trade, security, and sustainable development.
This was the outcome of a high-level diplomatic engagement held in Abuja on Friday, where Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, received the Mauritanian Foreign Minister, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. The Mauritanian minister was in Nigeria as Special Envoy of President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.
During the meeting, the Special Envoy conveyed goodwill messages from President Ghazouani to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reiterated Mauritania’s resolve to strengthen its longstanding ties with Nigeria. He emphasized the urgency for African nations to collaborate more closely in tackling shared challenges such as climate change, economic development, and regional security.
A key highlight of the discussions was Mauritania’s request for Nigeria’s support for its candidature for the position of Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), underscoring the importance of multilateral cooperation.
In response, Ambassador Ahmed welcomed the envoy and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to advancing mutual interests with Mauritania. He noted that although President Tinubu was unable to receive the delegation due to prior engagements, the message from President Ghazouani would be formally conveyed.

Ahmed further stressed the need to expand cooperation in critical areas such as trade, economic integration, and regional development, adding that Nigeria remains dedicated to working with Mauritania to promote peace, stability, and prosperity across Africa.
He assured the Mauritanian delegation that all issues raised, including support for international positions, would be carefully considered by the appropriate Nigerian authorities.
