The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed that coordinated air strike operations carried out in the general area of Metele, Borno State, have eliminated more than 20 fighters linked to Islamic State West Africa Province and Islamic State as part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts in Nigeria’s North-East.
Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the operation was conducted in close coordination with United States Africa Command. He explained that the strikes followed intelligence reports indicating the convergence and movement of terrorist elements within the area.
According to him, the successful strikes are part of sustained military operations aimed at dismantling terrorist networks, denying them safe havens, and restoring stability in the region. The latest offensive also builds on recent gains, including the neutralisation of a key ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.
Uba reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stressing that operations against insurgents would continue with renewed intensity.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation. Terrorists who threaten our citizens, communities and national stability will be located and defeated,” he said.
He further assured Nigerians that there would be no safe haven for terrorist elements anywhere in the country, as the military intensifies its campaign to eliminate insurgency and restore lasting peace.
