The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified concerns surrounding the recent neutralisation of a high-profile terrorist commander, Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, stating that the individual eliminated on May 16, 2026, is a distinct and verified senior operative within the global Islamic State network.
In a press statement issued by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the DHQ addressed public discourse triggered by media reports referencing a similar operation in 2024 involving a terrorist bearing the same name. The military explained that the recurrence of identical or similar names among insurgents is a common tactic employed by ISWAP and Boko Haram fighters as part of their indoctrination strategy to obscure identities and complicate intelligence tracking.
According to the DHQ, the Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki recently neutralised during a joint operation with the United States Africa Command has been conclusively identified through a combination of human intelligence and advanced technical surveillance.
The military described him as a senior global operative with direct links to international terrorist coordination, financing, and operations across the Sahel region, dismissing any ambiguity regarding his identity.
