The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Olatunbosun Oluyede, has called on journalists to uphold truth and professionalism as critical tools for promoting national unity and strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
Speaking through a representative at an Easter retreat organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists Federal Capital Territory Council, Oluyede stressed that national stability depends not only on military operations but also on responsible information management.
He noted that while Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges, the Armed Forces remain resolute in defending the nation, expressing optimism that the country will overcome its trials.
Drawing on the significance of Easter, the defence chief said the message of resurrection symbolises hope and renewal, assuring Nigerians that the country’s current difficulties are temporary.
“Nigeria continues to confront complex security challenges, yet we remain resilient. Our experience shows that trials are not permanent and renewal is always possible when faith and unity prevail,” he said.
Oluyede reaffirmed the military’s commitment to tackling terrorism, insurgency and banditry, noting that the sacrifices of troops have contributed to restoring normalcy in affected communities.
He, however, emphasised the strategic role of the media in national security, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy and avoid reports capable of inciting fear or division.
“In today’s information age, security operations are fought not only on the battlefield but also in the information domain. Accurate and responsible reporting strengthens national unity and builds public trust,” he added.
Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, highlighted the importance of ethical journalism in fostering accountability, transparency and democratic governance.
He said responsible reporting remains essential in combating corruption and strengthening institutions, noting that an informed citizenry is key to national development.
“A nation is not built only with infrastructure, but with trust, accountability and an informed citizenry. Ethical journalism shines light into dark corners and holds leaders accountable,” he said.
Musa added that ethical journalism helps to curb misinformation, promote social cohesion and amplify the voices of vulnerable groups in society.
Earlier, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Grace Ike, urged journalists to draw inspiration from the Easter message by renewing their commitment to truth, integrity and professional excellence.
He acknowledged the pressures faced by media practitioners, including tight deadlines and risks associated with truth-telling, but encouraged them to remain steadfast in upholding ethical standards.
“Operating in the Federal Capital Territory places a unique responsibility on us. We are at the center of national discourse. Our words carry weight, our reports influence decisions, and our integrity strengthens democracy,” he said.

Ike further called for unity within the union, describing it as essential for advancing journalism practice and safeguarding press freedom.
The retreat, themed “Resurrection Power: Grace, Faith, Hope and New Life,” brought together journalists, security officials and other stakeholders to reflect on faith, responsibility and the media’s role in national development. It featured presentations from various chapels including Information, NAN, Correspondents, FRCN Operations, FRCN Headquarters, Flame Chapel and ITV, alongside guest artistes.
