Professor Yusuf Jibril, Chief Medical Director of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), on Saturday expressed optimism that the 2026 budget would significantly improve healthcare delivery, research, and training at the institution, following challenges with funding in 2025.
In Abuja, following an interaction with with journalists after presenting his to the Senate Committee on Health, Prof. Jibril highlighted that insufficient fund releases in 2025 constrained the hospital’s capacity to maximize clinical services and research initiatives.
“Once the funds we requested for 2026 are released, we will see substantial improvements in the health sector,” Prof. Jibril said. “The appropriation is sufficient for us to promote research, train young doctors, specialists, and consultants, and further strengthen the clinical services we already provide.”
Despite past financial challenges, the hospital has innovated to generate internal revenue. Prof. Jibril noted that ABUTH now operates a bottled water production facility, a pharmaceutical production center for hand sanitizers and hand wash, and a large-scale oxygen production plant capable of producing 200 cylinders daily—well above the hospital’s requirement of 60 cylinders. “The surplus is sold, creating additional revenue to support hospital operations,” he explained.

The CMD also emphasized efforts to attract research collaborations and international grants, noting that indirect costs from these grants would further enhance service delivery and facility development.
ABUTH, located in Poochee, remains committed to maintaining high-quality clinical services while leveraging innovative revenue streams and research partnerships to offset funding gaps.
