The Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) has commenced an eight-month rehabilitation of the Iju and Adiyan Water Treatment Plants in a major move to improve access to potable water and strengthen service delivery across Lagos State.
The project, titled Rehabilitation of Iju Headworks and Akute Intake Station – Lots 1, 2 and 3, is part of the corporation’s asset management and renewal strategy aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and upgrading ageing infrastructure. Funded by the Lagos State Government, the rehabilitation is scheduled to run from February to October 2026.
Speaking at the project kick-off meeting on Tuesday at the LWC headquarters in Ijora, Lagos, the Managing Director of the corporation, Engr. Mukhtaar Tijani, said the intervention was critical to addressing longstanding operational challenges in the state’s water supply system. He was represented by the Executive Director, Operations, Engr. (Mrs.) Helen Omolanke Taiwo.
Tijani explained that the rehabilitation aligns with LWC’s five-year strategic business plan launched in December 2024, which places priority on infrastructure development as a pathway to improved service delivery. According to him, the project will focus largely on pump replacement and system upgrades, following approval by Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.
He stressed the need for strict adherence to technical standards and timely execution, noting that the project’s success would translate into a significant improvement in water supply across Lagos State. “This project must not be business as usual. We want all hands on deck to ensure timely and successful delivery,” he said.
Also speaking, the Director of Production, Engr. Agiri Mustapha, described the rehabilitation as a critical intervention for both the corporation and the state government. He recalled previous challenges associated with pump installations and disclosed that the governor directed that only original manufacturers with sole franchise rights be engaged to guarantee quality, durability, and long-term efficiency.

Representatives of the contractors and manufacturers—KSB Pumps & Valves Nigeria Ltd., Wilo Pumps Nigeria Ltd., and Springfield Electric Ltd.—assured the corporation of quality delivery within the project timeline. They also pledged to provide personnel training and two years of equipment management support after completion and commissioning.
The Lagos Water Corporation expressed optimism that the rehabilitation of the Iju and Adiyan facilities will significantly boost operational capacity, improve service reliability, and expand access to safe drinking water for residents across the state.
