Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health challenges that require urgent medical attention.
His resignation was contained in a letter dated December 1, 2025, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the letter, Badaru explained that his decision was driven by the need to focus fully on his health and ongoing treatment.
The development was confirmed in a press statement issued on Monday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, President Tinubu has accepted Badaru’s resignation and expressed gratitude for his service and contributions to national security during his tenure.
“The President thanks Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar for his dedication and commitment to the nation and wishes him a speedy recovery,” the statement said.
President Tinubu is expected to forward the name of Badaru’s successor to the Senate for confirmation later this week.

Badaru, 63, previously served as the two-term Governor of Jigawa State from 2015 to 2023 before his appointment as Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.
His resignation comes at a critical moment, following President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a national security emergency, a move that underscores the administration’s renewed focus on strengthening security architecture across the country. The President is expected to provide further details on the scope and measures surrounding the declaration in the coming days.
