The Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF) will host a high-level Fireside Chat on “Breaking Barriers to Maternal Health Equity: The Role of Health Insurance in Promoting Women’s Wellness” on Tuesday, April 30, 2025, in Abuja.
Maternal health equity ensures that every woman—regardless of location, income, education, ethnicity, or social status has a fair and just opportunity to experience safe pregnancy and childbirth. Yet in Nigeria, stark disparities persist. Women in rural communities, conflict zones, and among marginalized groups continue to face preventable maternal complications and deaths.
According to NSSF, Nigeria records an alarming 1,047 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, with over 1,000 women dying annually from pregnancy-related causes. The country accounts for 14–20% of all global maternal deaths.
“These figures are more than just numbers—they represent lives lost, futures cut short, and families left shattered,” the Fund stated. “We are coming together to say: enough is enough.”
The Fireside Chat will explore practical, data-driven solutions—such as expanding health insurance coverage to include women’s wellness services, introducing gender-responsive policies, and launching innovative tools like wellness vouchers for low-income women.
