Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has pledged sustained collaboration between the state government, the Federal Government and emergency response agencies to ensure a safe and effective rescue and recovery operation at the fire-ravaged Great Nigeria Insurance House on Marina, Lagos Island.
The Governor made this commitment on Tuesday during an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster scene, where coordinated operations by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other emergency stakeholders are ongoing.
Conducted around the affected high-rise building by operational leads, Sanwo-Olu commended NEMA and sister agencies for their professionalism and dedication since the outbreak of the fire. He stressed that the severely compromised structural condition of the building demands extreme caution to prevent further loss of life, particularly among emergency responders.
According to the Governor, arrangements are being finalised to deploy specialised equipment and technical expertise for the controlled demolition of the weakened structure, after which debris will be safely cleared to allow recovery efforts to progress without risk.
Sanwo-Olu also praised the establishment of a Help Desk near the incident site, describing it as critical to providing accurate information and psychosocial support to victims and the general public. The desk is jointly managed by NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Local Emergency Management Committee and other stakeholders.

Meanwhile, NEMA has reinforced its intervention following the earlier deployment of its Director of Search and Rescue, Air Commodore Bature Usman, by the agency’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar. The technical support team from NEMA Headquarters is working alongside the Lagos Operations Office and other responders to strengthen coordination, enhance situational assessments and ensure the safety of emergency personnel and the public.
NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Lagos State Government and affected persons throughout the response and recovery phases of the Marina fire incident.
