Acorp Member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Temiloluwa Owolabi, has organised an Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy session for students of Immaculate Heart Comprehensive High School, Ikeja, Lagos State, to equip them with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to thrive in an AI-driven world.
The training, held on Thursday at the Education District II Headquarters, Maryland, was organised under Owolabi’s personal Community Development Project (CDP) themed “I, AI and You: Learning to Think, Engage and Create in an AI-Driven World.”
Owolabi, an Electrical/Electronics Engineering graduate currently serving at Greenpeg Nigeria Ltd., Ikeja, said her Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) background motivated her to empower young people with the right knowledge to navigate the fast-changing digital landscape.
According to her, the widespread use of AI and its growing influence across sectors, including education, communication and business, made it crucial for students to be equipped with the right skills to interact with technology safely and productively.
“AI is transforming our world rapidly. My mission is to help students understand its power, protect themselves from its risks, and use it ethically to shape meaningful, future-driven opportunities,” she said.
She explained that many children access the internet without proper guidance, making them vulnerable to digital risks, misinformation and unethical use of technology, hence the need to teach responsible AI usage, ethics and critical thinking.
In her remarks, the Vice-Principal of the school, Mrs Bolanle Apena-Mafemi, commended Owolabi for her commitment to public school students, describing the initiative as innovative and reflective of rare youth dedication.
She noted that the session addressed critical emerging issues, adding that it would strengthen the students’ understanding of AI and encourage them to apply technology for positive and value-driven purposes.
“This programme will open their eyes to the reality that AI has come to stay, guiding them to use it meaningfully and responsibly,” Apena-Mafemi said.
However, she called for increased support to sustain the initiative, including specialised training for older teachers, provision of digital learning devices and more AI-focused capacity-building programmes for students.
Speaking on the impact of the session, a student, Master Yusuf Ridwan, said he gained valuable insights into AI ethics, machine learning, deep learning and different types of artificial intelligence.

He expressed hope of studying Robotics Engineering in the future and called for more similar programmes to help students prepare effectively for the AI revolution.
Another student, Miss Margaret Okereke, who aspires to study law, also thanked Owolabi for the opportunity, saying she learnt new ways to use AI positively and responsibly.
