The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) has reinforced its commitment to delivering quality healthcare, thanks to timely federal intervention and landmark philanthropic support.
Following the devastating flood in Maiduguri on September 9, 2024, which severely damaged the hospital’s linear accelerator, the Federal Ministry of Health, under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, mobilized resources that culminated in a $1 million donation from philanthropist Chief Emeka Offor. The contribution facilitated the procurement of a brand-new linear accelerator, now named in honour of Chief Offor.
Speaking at the hospital’s budget defence on Saturday in Abuja, Professor Modu Baba Kagu, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, said the intervention underscores the importance of federal and private partnerships in sustaining essential healthcare services.
“One major idea we have embraced is that hospitals should not only function as service providers, but should also develop sustainable ways of generating revenue to strengthen and support the healthcare system,” Prof. Kagu said.
In line with this vision, UMTH has introduced innovative revenue-generating initiatives, including a water treatment and table water production facility, hospital-based schools, and modern incineration systems.
Prof. Kagu also highlighted the hospital’s expanding network of partnerships. Its stroke centre now collaborates with the Walton Neuroscience Centre in Liverpool, enabling advanced procedures such as endoscopic brain surgeries, allowing patients to access specialised care without invasive operations.

On human resources, the expansion of services to 12 functional centres has increased manpower needs. Following last year’s employment of 470 staff, the Head of Service has approved the recruitment of an additional 600 personnel, significantly boosting the hospital’s workforce.
Prof. Kagu expressed gratitude for the combined support of the federal government and philanthropists, reaffirming UMTH’s commitment to improved service delivery, research advancement, and specialised training for healthcare professionals. He called on lawmakers to consider increased budget allocations for 2026 to further enhance the hospital’s capacity to serve Nigerians optimally.
