The Honorable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun, has lauded Ado and Ohimini Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Benue State for achieving the esteemed Open Defecation Free (ODF) status.
The Minister made this declaration during a commemoration ceremony in Otukpo, Benue State, on Tuesday.
Represented by Mrs. Elizabeth Ugoh, Director of Water Quality Control and Sanitation at the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
Prof Utsev emphasized that this accomplishment signifies a significant milestone for public health, dignity, and development in Benue State and Nigeria.
He articulated that this achievement transcends a mere title; it embodies the creation of a healthier and more prosperous future for our populace, reaffirming the commitment to attaining an ODF Nigeria by 2025.
He underscored that open defecation remains a formidable challenge in numerous regions globally, yielding far-reaching consequences. also observed that it compromises health and undermines education—especially impacting young girls, among others.
Professor Utsev added that eradicating open defecation is a pivotal stride towards enhanced sanitation, culminating in reduced diseases, heightened productivity, and amplified dignity for our citizens.
Accentuating the paramount importance of sanitation, the minister emphasizied that access to pristine and secure lavatories, coupled with sound hygiene practices, significantly diminishes the prevalence of waterborne ailments such as cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid.
According to him, substantially elevates the welfare of women and children, who are often the most susceptible when sanitation access is restricted.
Commending the collaborative endeavors of the Benue State Government, UNICEF, and various community entities, the Minister acknowledged the vital roles played by traditional and community leaders in achieving this status. He encouraged the perpetuation of these advancements and the pursuit of statewide ODF status.
The ceremony encompassed a goodwill message from UNICEF Chief of WASH, Dr. Jane Bevan, and remarks from the Acting GM of BERWASSA and Benue State Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment, and Climate Change, Hon. Odoh Ugwu. A pinnacle of the event was the bestowal of the ODF certificate upon the two LGAs.
With this feat, the total count of ODF LGAs in Nigeria has ascended to 136, underscoring the nation’s strides towards enhancing sanitation and public health.
