Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has held strategic talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, in Ankara as part of efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation ahead of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to Türkiye.
The high-level meeting, which marked Tuggar’s first official visit to Türkiye, focused on strengthening political, economic, security and multilateral relations between both countries. Discussions underscored the growing strategic importance of Nigeria–Türkiye ties and the need to consolidate existing gains.
During the talks, Minister Fidan commended Nigeria’s leadership role in promoting regional stability, peace and prosperity in West Africa, noting its influence within regional and continental frameworks. He described Nigeria as a key partner in advancing shared interests across Africa and beyond.
Tuggar, on his part, placed strong emphasis on expanding bilateral trade and boosting mutual investment, particularly in sectors attractive to Turkish firms such as construction, manufacturing, energy and infrastructure. Both ministers acknowledged the steady growth in economic relations and stressed the need to unlock further opportunities through structured public–private sector engagement.

Security cooperation also featured prominently, with both sides identifying prospects for deeper collaboration in military affairs and the defence industry as part of broader efforts to address regional and global security challenges.
The visit, according to a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, reflects the increasingly strategic character of Nigeria–Türkiye relations. It is anchored on shared positions on sovereignty, institutional cooperation and pragmatic partnership, with both countries expressing confidence in the prospects for enhanced engagement in the period ahead.
