Troops Foil Major Terror Threat, Recover 1,270 Rounds of Heavy Ammunition in Maiduguri

Troops of Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have uncovered a large cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Maiduguri, thwarting what security sources described as a potential terrorist or criminal operation in the North-East.

The recovery, which followed sustained intelligence-led surveillance and follow-up actions, underscores intensified military efforts to restrict the movement and operational capacity of terrorist elements, particularly after several suicide bombers were recently neutralised or apprehended in the area.

According to the Media Information Officer of OPHK, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, troops received a distress call at about 3:00 p.m. on January 2, 2026, alerting security forces to suspicious metallic objects concealed inside a drainage channel. Troops, supported by Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) personnel, were immediately deployed to secure the location and assess the threat.

A detailed search of the site led to the recovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition warheads, including live rounds, as well as power banks hidden within the drainage channel. Preliminary safety measures were swiftly implemented, while efforts continue to drain the channel and check for additional hazardous materials.

No casualties were recorded during the operation. Security forces have since intensified patrols and area domination in collaboration with the Police and other agencies to safeguard residents, protect critical infrastructure, and prevent any attempt by criminal or terrorist elements to retrieve the recovered items.

The discovery highlights the growing impact of intelligence-driven operations, sustained military pressure, and timely community reporting in preventing attacks. Headquarters OPHK has again urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
