President Bola Tinubu has directed the Attorney General of the Federation to secure the immediate release of minors detained by the Nigeria Police for participating in hunger protests two months ago.
The order comes amid rising concerns about the welfare of the detained minors, and it underscores the President’s commitment to addressing the grievances expressed by Nigerians.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris, during an emergency press briefing at the State House on Monday.
Minister Idris confirmed that President Tinubu’s directive reflects a compassionate response to the growing hardship across the country and follows recent criticisms about the handling of the minors’ detention.
“The President acknowledges the hardship many are facing and is committed to finding sustainable solutions to the nation’s hunger crisis,” Idris stated.
The President also instructed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to oversee the safe return of the minors to their families. Additionally, an investigation has been launched to examine the circumstances that led to their prolonged detention.
