President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the family of Mabel Segun following the passing of the celebrated writer.
The President also extends his sympathies to the literary community, as well as her friends and admirers, recognizing the profound loss of an iconic literary figure.
Ms. Segun passed away on Thursday, just weeks after celebrating her 95th birthday.
A distinguished poet, playwright, and author of short stories and children’s books, she was a trailblazer in children’s literature. She founded the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria in 1978 and later established the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in Ibadan in 1990, both of which significantly shaped the landscape of Nigerian children’s literature.

President Tinubu honors the legacy of the literary luminary, acknowledging her extraordinary contributions that have left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s literary heritage.
He highlights Ms. Segun’s first book, My Father’s Daughter, published in 1965, which received international acclaim and continues to serve as an inspiration and guide for aspiring writers, literary enthusiasts, and students.
The President prays for the peaceful repose of her soul and divine comfort for her family.
