Abuja, October 8, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the departure of Professor Mahmood Yakubu as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following the completion of his second term in office.
Appointed in November 2015 as the 14th INEC Chairman, Yakubu’s initial five-year tenure was renewed in 2020. His decade-long leadership concluded this month, marking the end of an era in Nigeria’s electoral administration.
President Tinubu commended Professor Yakubu for his steadfast commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy and for overseeing credible elections throughout his tenure. In recognition of his distinguished service, the President conferred on him the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON).

The President also directed Professor Yakubu to hand over to the most senior National Commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve in an acting capacity pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
In his farewell letter dated October 3, 2025, Professor Yakubu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and the Nigerian people for the privilege to serve, describing his time at the helm of INEC as an “honour and a national responsibility.”
