President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Tokyo, Japan, in the early hours of Tuesday to participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), a high-level summit bringing together African leaders, global development partners, and major investors.
The conference, scheduled for August 20–22 at the Pacifico Yokohama, will focus on the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” Discussions will centre on driving Africa’s economic transformation, improving the business climate, strengthening institutions, and fostering resilience through private investment, innovation, peace, and stability.

Tinubu, whose plane touched down at Haneda International Airport at 12:50 a.m. local time, was received by Japanese envoy Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, and other officials of the Nigerian Embassy.
Beyond plenary sessions, the President is expected to engage in bilateral talks and hold strategic meetings with chief executives of leading Japanese firms with investments in Nigeria—part of his broader push to attract foreign investment and deepen economic partnerships for the country’s development.
