Three men were successfully rescued after being trapped in a blocked manhole in the Guzape area of Asokoro District, Abuja.
The operation was conducted by the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) in collaboration with the FCT Fire Service and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The acting Director-General of FEMD, Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. He explained that two of the victims were labourers hired to remove debris obstructing the manhole, which connects to the central sewage system.
According to Mohammed, the incident occurred due to the buildup of methane gas, which caused an explosion and led to the suffocation of the two workers. A third individual, a volunteer who attempted to rescue the trapped labourers, also became trapped in the process.
“One of the rescued men is currently receiving treatment at Wuse General Hospital, while the other two are being treated at the Asokoro District Hospital,” Mohammed said.

The FEMD Director-General also commended the swift response of emergency teams, highlighting their efforts in averting what could have been a severe tragedy.
