Tension Eases in Benue Community After Council Boss Intervenes, Orders Security Deployment Over Alleged Killing

Tension that gripped Apa-Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State has subsided following swift intervention by the council chairman, Engr. Sunny Oche, after an alleged killing triggered fears of reprisal attacks and possible communal unrest.

Residents of the community were thrown into panic after the lifeless body of an Agila indigene was discovered in a bush on the outskirts of the area, sparking outrage and suspicion. The victim was reportedly found by a local youth search team in what eyewitnesses described as a disturbing scene.

The incident heightened anxiety across Apa-Agila and surrounding settlements, with fears that the killing—allegedly linked to an individual suspected to be from the Ezza community—could ignite violence between both groups. Many residents temporarily fled their homes, while businesses shut down amid rumours of impending reprisals.

Community sources said the situation threatened the already fragile peace between the Apa-Agila and Ezza populations. “There was fear everywhere, especially among the Ezza community who were worried about possible retaliation,” a resident disclosed.

However, calm was restored after Engr. Oche ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to strategic locations within the affected communities. The visible presence of security operatives reassured residents and helped prevent any breakdown of law and order.

In a further effort to address the crisis, the council chairman has initiated the formation of a peace committee to facilitate dialogue, ensure justice, and promote long-term coexistence between the communities.

Stakeholders from both sides have commended the intervention, describing it as timely and crucial in averting violence. Community leaders noted that the peace committee would provide a platform for conflict resolution and rebuilding trust.

Meanwhile, investigations into the killing are ongoing. Police authorities have reportedly arrested a prime suspect, while efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals linked to the incident.

Leaders from the victim’s community have appealed to youths to remain calm and avoid any form of reprisal, assuring them that justice will be served through lawful means.

Although normalcy is gradually returning to Apa-Agila, the incident highlights the fragile nature of inter-communal relations and the importance of proactive leadership and security response in preventing escalation.
