Kanu Life Imprisonment: All Hope Not Lost, Political Solution Underway — Deputy Speaker Kalu Assures Releases
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, has assured that all hope is not lost regarding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, despite his recent conviction.
His assurance comes less than 24 hours after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on terrorism charges.
Speaking on Thursday, Kalu expressed strong optimism that a political solution—which had previously been impossible because the case was still in court—will now be pursued to secure Kanu’s freedom.
He said well-meaning Igbo leaders are already making overtures, adding that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, “will not be averse” to considering a political resolution.
“It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court. But now that the court has finished, it is time to intensify request for the President’s intervention, and we are sure that the President is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost. Our people should remain calm,” the Deputy Speaker said.

Kalu appealed for calm across the South East and the country at large, reiterating that efforts are ongoing and that optimism remains high.
The conviction of the IPOB leader has generated widespread reaction, but Kalu insists that the window for a political settlement has now widened with the conclusion of court processes.
