Nigeria and the Republic of Austria have reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, advancing multilateral cooperation, and deepening partnerships across key strategic sectors following a high-level engagement in Abuja.
The meeting, held on Thursday, brought together Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumiegwu-Ojukwu, and the Secretary-General of Austria’s Federal Ministry of International and European Affairs, His Excellency Nikolaus Marschik.
According to a statement signed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the engagement provided an opportunity for both sides to review the trajectory of Nigeria–Austria relations, exchange views on evolving global and regional challenges, and identify practical pathways for expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
The discussions took place against the backdrop of significant geopolitical shifts, economic realignments, and security challenges affecting Europe, Africa, and the broader international system, underscoring the importance of sustained dialogue and principled diplomacy.
Welcoming the Austrian delegation, Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for Austria’s long-standing friendship and constructive engagement, noting that bilateral relations between both countries have remained cordial for over five decades. She recalled Austria’s historical diplomatic presence in Nigeria and acknowledged the contributions of former Austrian envoys in strengthening institutional and people-to-people ties.
The Minister emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to expanding economic cooperation, particularly in trade and investment. She identified renewable energy, green and environmental technologies, food security, agro-processing, infrastructure development, digital innovation, and information and communications technology as priority sectors where Austrian expertise and private-sector participation could support Nigeria’s development agenda.
She encouraged Austrian companies to explore opportunities within Nigeria’s Special Economic Zones and leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a gateway to wider regional markets, noting that ongoing economic reforms and diversification efforts are designed to attract long-term, value-driven investment.
Cultural, educational, and academic cooperation also featured prominently. The Minister highlighted existing memoranda of understanding on cultural exchange and noted growing interest among Nigerian students and professionals in education and training opportunities in Austria. She expressed Nigeria’s readiness to expand scholarship programmes, academic partnerships, and institutional collaboration between universities, research institutions, and cultural bodies in both countries.
On security, Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu briefed the Austrian delegation on Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism, violent extremism, and organised crime, particularly in the Sahel and West African sub-region. She outlined Nigeria’s engagements with international partners to counter Boko Haram and related groups, rebuild post-conflict communities, support internally displaced persons, and strengthen intelligence-sharing and capacity-building frameworks.
She stressed that terrorism and insecurity are global challenges requiring collective action, shared responsibility, and sustained international cooperation.
Migration management was identified as another area of shared concern. The Minister emphasised Nigeria’s preference for orderly and regular migration pathways that protect human rights while addressing root causes such as unemployment, skills gaps, and socio-economic pressures. She highlighted Nigeria’s interest in skills development, vocational training, and structured mobility programmes that transform migration into a tool for development rather than instability.
In his response, His Excellency Nikolaus Marschik expressed appreciation for the warm reception and candid discussions, reaffirming Austria’s respect for Nigeria’s leadership role on the African continent. He described Nigeria as one of Austria’s closest and most important partners in Africa, noting its demographic, economic, and strategic significance.
Marschik outlined Austria’s efforts to develop a comprehensive Africa strategy anchored on equality, mutual learning, and measurable impact. Priority areas include peace and security, economic cooperation, migration and skills-based mobility, education, science, culture, and environmental protection, guided by African continental priorities and global sustainable development objectives.
Multilateral cooperation and the defence of a rules-based international order formed a central theme of the engagement. The Austrian delegation highlighted Austria’s role as a neutral host to major international organisations and expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s support for Austria’s candidature to the United Nations Security Council, with assurances of reciprocal support for Nigeria’s future multilateral aspirations.
Ambassador Odumiegwu-Ojukwu reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm commitment to multilateralism, dialogue, and diplomacy, while sharing Nigeria’s perspectives on regional dynamics in West Africa, including challenges related to governance, regional integration, and collective security.
Both sides acknowledged that regional instability, whether in Africa or Europe, reinforces the need for cooperation among countries committed to international law, peaceful coexistence, and institutional dialogue.
Education, capacity-building, and people-to-people exchange also emerged as areas of convergence. The Austrian delegation highlighted opportunities for Nigerian participation in programmes at Austria’s Diplomatic Academy and expressed openness to institutional collaboration between diplomatic training institutions.

The engagement underscored a shared understanding that, amid global uncertainty, strong bilateral partnerships anchored in multilateral cooperation are essential to peace, stability, and sustainable development.
