Port Harcourt, Rivers State – Operatives of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and live ammunition following a foiled abduction attempt in the state capital. The operation, carried out under the intensified security strategy of the 23rd Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, also led to the discovery of the gang’s hideout.
According to police sources, the breakthrough came after a distress call in the early hours of March 20 from 35-year-old resident Fadi Nasser, who reported that armed men attempted to abduct him at his residence on Orogbum Crescent, Woji Road, in the Government Reserved Area (GRA). Despite gunfire from the attackers, the victim narrowly escaped, prompting an immediate response from security operatives.
Investigations gained momentum after a mobile phone, believed to belong to one of the attackers, was recovered at the scene. Using technical intelligence, officers from the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit, Aluu, traced the device, leading to the arrest of Joseph Abibo, identified as a gang member.
During interrogation, Abibo provided actionable information about the gang’s hideout. When police operatives raided the location, they were met with heavy gunfire. In the ensuing gun duel, six suspects reportedly escaped into a nearby river with gunshot wounds. Authorities recovered two AK-47 rifles, four magazines, and 108 rounds of live ammunition at the scene.
Police officials said the operation reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle kidnapping syndicates and combat violent crimes in Rivers State. A coordinated manhunt is underway to apprehend fleeing suspects and recover additional weapons. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
