The Sultanate Council has officially declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan 1447AH following the confirmed sighting of the new crescent moon in various parts of the country.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu, who disclosed that credible reports from moonsighting committees nationwide confirmed the appearance of the Ramadan crescent on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
According to the statement, the Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who is also the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), accepted the reports and consequently declared Wednesday as the first day of fasting for Muslims in Nigeria.
The Sultan congratulated the Muslim Ummah on the commencement of the holy month and urged the faithful to dedicate the period to prayers, spiritual reflection, and acts of charity.
He also called on Muslims to pray for peace, unity, progress, and national development, especially at a time when the country faces socio-economic and security challenges.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting from dawn to sunset, increased devotion, and community solidarity.
The declaration sets the stage for millions of Muslims across Nigeria to begin the 30-day spiritual exercise, marked by fasting, nightly prayers, and charitable giving.
