Ned Nwoko, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, has been honored with the 2024 Human Rights Man of the Year Award by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).
This distinguished accolade recognizes his exceptional performance in the 10th Senate and his transformative initiatives that have positively impacted Delta North and beyond.
HURIWA’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, highlighted that Senator Nwoko’s legislative excellence, community development efforts, and unwavering dedication to advancing human rights in Nigeria made him a deserving recipient of the award.
In just two years, Senator Nwoko has sponsored 25 bills and moved 19 motions, setting him apart from many of his peers. His legislative achievements include the groundbreaking Data Protection Bill, which addresses critical digital privacy and security concerns, as well as motions targeting urgent issues like flooding and environmental hazards.
One of his standout advocacy efforts is the proposal to establish a National Social Security Agency, replacing the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s recent executive proposal and reflects Nwoko’s forward-thinking approach to social welfare.
Beyond legislation, Senator Nwoko has significantly contributed to community development. His initiatives include awarding scholarships, installing solar-powered streetlights, constructing boreholes, and organizing free medical outreach programs in Delta North.
In addition, his establishment of Africa’s first Sports University in Idumuje-Ugboko has created unique opportunities for youth development and economic empowerment, further cementing his legacy as a transformative leader.
HURIWA also commended his passionate advocacy for the creation of Anioma State, a movement rooted in the aspirations of Delta North communities for justice and equitable representation. This initiative reflects his determination to address systemic marginalization and champion fairness.
The award ceremony will be held on December 10, 2024, coinciding with International Human Rights Day, in Abuja. The event will celebrate Senator Nwoko’s remarkable achievements while encouraging public officials to prioritize human rights, justice, and inclusive development.
In his acceptance speech, Senator Nwoko expressed gratitude to HURIWA and reaffirmed his commitment to justice, equity, and the advancement of human rights in Nigeria.
