A bill sponsored by Senator Opeyemi Michael Bamidele, proposing the establishment of the Federal University of Agriculture and Tropical Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, has successfully passed the second reading in the National Assembly, moving closer to its final approval.
Defending the bill, Senator Bamidele emphasized that the proposed university would serve as a center of excellence for agricultural research, education, and extension services. “Once established, it will provide a comprehensive curriculum covering both theoretical and practical aspects of agriculture, including crop production, livestock management, agricultural economics, and environmental sustainability,” he said.
Senator Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges, reiterated the importance of investing in youth education, training, and retraining to enable Nigeria to leverage its rich agricultural resources and become a global leader in the sector.
Lalong highlighted the significant benefits that the university would bring, including human capital development, enhanced agricultural productivity, food security, and sustainable economic growth. He noted that the institution would prioritize the conservation of natural resources, climate change mitigation, and environmental education.
“The bill aims to produce agricultural experts who can share knowledge and address contemporary global challenges such as hunger and poverty. This institution will be more than just an academic center—it will be a catalyst for sustainable development, food security, and economic prosperity for Nigeria,” Lalong remarked.
In conclusion, Lalong stressed that investing in training and retraining young people is never a waste but a necessary step toward securing the nation’s future.
