The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics Privileges, and Public Petitions, Senator Bernards Neda Imasuen, has emphasized the importance of upholding the law and ensuring accountability among government agencies, saying that no entity is exempt from the law and that all must adhere to its regulations.
He has warned that failure to comply with summons from the committee may result in warrants of arrest being issued.
During a session with journalists on Tuesday in Abuja, Senator Imasuen highlighted the challenges faced by the committee, particularly in cases where summoned MDAs disregard the summons.
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions further stressed that any Ministry, Department, or Agency (MDA) failing to appear before the committee in response to filed petitions may face the issuance of warrants of arrest, as mandated by the Constitution.
He cited an example involving the Nigerian Railway Corporation, whose absence after being invited necessitated further action.
The Senator representing Edo South Senatorial Districts made it clear that the power to issue warrants of arrest would be exercised responsibly to uphold accountability and the rule of law.
Senator Imasuen also encouraged students who have been expelled from universities to submit petitions to the Senate outlining their grievances.
He assured that such petitions would be reviewed, and if deemed meritorious, the respective institutions would be summoned to explain their actions.
Senator Imasuen expressed concern about a case involving a Nigerian medical professional trained in Cuba, who faced challenges upon returning to Nigeria. “The individual alleged unfair treatment by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, prompting the committee to request the presence of relevant parties for further clarification and resolution.”
Senator Imasuen further reiterated that the committee is committed in upholding the law, ensuring accountability, and addressing grievances reflects the Senate Committee’s dedication to promoting transparency and fairness within governmental and educational institutions.
