Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central senatorial district, has dedicated his recent Leadership in Legislative Impact award, presented by NASSNews, the Nigerian Assembly newspaper, to the constituents of Kano Central.
As the representative of one of Nigeria’s most populous constituencies, Senator Hanga was honored as one of the top 10 lawmakers in the country for his impactful legislative work, including significant contributions in areas such as legislative priorities, educational interventions, and community engagement.
Among his key legislative achievements is a bill aimed at establishing a national framework for flood prevention and disaster management, which has already passed its first reading. Senator Hanga has also championed efforts to address Nigeria’s drug abuse crisis by sponsoring a bill to create drug awareness and rehabilitation centers nationwide. This bill has advanced through its second reading and awaits public hearings.
In line with his commitment to education and food security, Hanga introduced a bill proposing the establishment of a University of Agriculture in Kano State. This initiative aligns with the government’s strategic policy to combat hunger and enhance food security.
Senator Hanga’s dedication to his constituents extends beyond legislation. He has spearheaded various community-driven projects, including scholarships for students, funding for common entrance exam fees, vocational training programs for youth and women, and agricultural empowerment initiatives such as fish farming.
Reflecting on the award, Hanga expressed gratitude and motivation to continue his efforts, stating, “If you look at what I have accomplished in the constituency and compare it with the budget, everything aligns with my objectives and vision for our people.”
He emphasized the significance of his contributions in Senate committees, attributing this active engagement as a key reason for his recognition.
At the award ceremony on Wednesday, Senator Hanga was accompanied by a large group of enthusiastic supporters, distinguishable in their red caps and chanting “Kwankwasiya.”
A dedicated member of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Hanga highlighted that his extensive political career, which began in 1978, has shaped his loyalty and commitment. “I have been in politics for a very long time and gained substantial experience. Being part of a party means upholding loyalty and setting an example for those who will come after us,” he said.
