Abuja – President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has urged members of the 10th National Assembly to focus on delivering tangible results to Nigerians through bold legislation, accountability, and partnership with the executive arm of government.
Speaking during his welcome address as the Senate resumed plenary on Tuesday after the nation’s 65th Independence anniversary, Akpabio said Nigerians are no longer interested in promises or lamentations but expect decisive action that improves their lives.
“Our people do not look to us for lamentations. They look to us for action,” he declared. “We must not flinch from the duty of relief. While our hearts grieve, our hopes endure.”
The Senate President began by congratulating Nigerians on the nation’s independence, describing it as a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to national progress. He also extended condolences to families affected by recent tragedies, including violent attacks in Gugi and Katsina States and the killing of 12 forest guards in Kwara State.
“The 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria hereby extends to them the hand of fellowship and the prayer of comfort,” he said, assuring that the legislature would continue to support recovery and relief efforts.
Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to economic reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy, attracting investments, and broadening the tax base.
He emphasized the need to strengthen key sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, particularly rail and irrigation systems, to tackle hunger and foster sustainable growth.
He also pledged that the Senate would maintain a transparent and accountable posture in its oversight duties.
“This Senate will continue to remain open, accountable, and responsive. For accountability is the lifeblood of democracy,” he stated.
Akpabio cautioned against any attempt to undermine the independence of the legislature, stressing that weakening the parliament would amount to eroding the foundation of democracy itself.
Turning to the political class, he urged leaders and citizens alike to treat elections as sacred and to value integrity, competence, and devotion to service over theatrics and populism.
“Leadership is not a carnival, and governance is not a stage for theatrics. Let us choose men and women of integrity and sincere devotion to our country,” he advised.
The Senate President concluded by calling on lawmakers to legislate with vision and courage for the present and future generations.

“Let history record that in our time, we did not shrink from the truth nor flinch from our duty. Let this celebration be remembered as an instrument of national transformation and a citadel of democracy that brought hope to our nation,” Akpabio said.
He then wished his colleagues a fruitful legislative session, praying that “God prospers our labour and blesses the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
