The Senate will resume plenary today, Tuesday, May 6, 2025, to continue its legislative duties and advance the mandate of the Nigerian people. Top on the agenda is the continued consideration and passage of the 2024 Tax Reform Bills. These reforms are crucial to overhauling Nigeria’s tax system, boosting federal revenue, and empowering all tiers of government to implement impactful projects and deliver the dividends of democracy.
Beyond fiscal reforms, the Senate is set to collaborate with the Executive to address ongoing socio-political tensions nationwide, with particular focus on the political crisis in Rivers State. The objective is to facilitate reconciliation among stakeholders and tackle the underlying causes of the conflict in the broader interest of national stability and unity.
The Senate also acknowledges the troubling resurgence of insecurity in parts of the country, including Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau States. As the legislative arm tasked with ensuring peace and good governance, the Senate will intensify consultations with security stakeholders and propose mechanisms to enhance national security architecture and curb terrorism.
During the recess, the Presidency made several key appointments, notably Mr. Bayo Ojulari as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and the management team for the South-South Development Commission. The Senate will commence the screening and confirmation process for these and other presidential nominees in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Meanwhile, the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), led by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I. Jubrin, will be accelerated. The process aims to strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure and address critical constitutional gaps. Additionally, the Senate will begin a comprehensive review of the Electoral Act, 2022, to improve transparency and credibility in future elections.

Several strategic bills across key sectors remain pending before the Senate. These will be given priority consideration and fast-tracked. Senate committees have also been urged to organize public hearings to engage citizens, gather input, and deepen public participation in the legislative process.
