Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North West Development Commission (NWDC), Senator Babangida Hussaini, has issued a strong call for urgent institutional reforms and strategic collaboration within the Commission, warning that inefficiency, disunity, and lack of commitment threaten the delivery of its developmental mandate to the North West region.
Speaking during a crucial engagement with the Board and Executive Management of the NWDC at the National Assembly Complex on Wednesday in Abuja, Senator Hussaini described the Commission as a flagship initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, aimed at correcting long-standing socio-economic and infrastructural imbalances affecting the over 60 million people in the North West.
“The establishment of the NWDC is not just a legislative milestone, but a bold expression of the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive development, stability, and prosperity,” he said. “However, legislation alone does not bring transformation. That responsibility now lies with the Commission’s leadership.”
Senator Hussaini expressed concern over negative reports about the Commission in print and social media, pointing to signs of weak institutional capacity and a lack of visible impact.
“The National Assembly will not shrink from its constitutional responsibility. We will not allow any weakness to derail our push for development. Our resolve to promote and strengthen the NWDC is non-negotiable,” he stated firmly.
The Senator urged the Board and Executive Management to avoid working in silos and instead pursue a unified, visionary, and sacrificial approach to governance. “The people of the North West cannot afford the price of conflict of interest or administrative stagnation. What they need is a Commission that delivers, on education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, employment, and security.”
He further emphasized that history will judge not by positions held, but by impact made. “Posterity will not ask who sat where, but what was achieved,” he added, calling for transparency, innovation, and purposeful leadership.

On behalf of the National Assembly, Senator Hussaini reaffirmed full legislative backing for the NWDC but warned that harmony, discipline, and delivery must come from within.
“We are at a defining moment, and the North West is watching. Let us not fail them,” he concluded.
