The Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to establish the Federal University of Science, Deba, in Gombe State. The bill, sponsored by Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje, was debated and supported during plenary on Tuesday.
Leading the debate, Senator Goje — a former governor of Gombe State — highlighted the university’s potential to drive socio-economic growth in the state, the North East, and the nation at large.
“The proposed university will serve as a hub for scientific knowledge and innovation. It aims to nurture professionals with the expertise, mindset, and problem-solving abilities needed to advance Nigeria’s development,” he stated.
Goje further emphasized the need for more specialized institutions in Nigeria to enable the country to compete globally in science, technology, and economic development.
Supporting the bill, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi) described the proposed university as a strategic investment in human capital. He praised Goje as “the architect of modern Gombe” and stressed that the institution would serve not only Gombe State but the entire North East region.

In his remarks, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, who presided over the plenary, described the bill as “people-oriented” and worthy of bipartisan support.
The bill was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFUND, chaired by Senator Muntari Dandutse, for further legislative action.
