Sterling Oil Exploration and Energy Production Company (SEEPCO) says it has achieved a 90 per cent conversion of its operational fleet and equipment to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), resulting in a 25 per cent reduction in operational emissions.
The company also disclosed that it has planted over 10,000 trees across its host communities as part of ongoing sustainability initiatives aimed at mitigating climate impact and enhancing environmental stewardship.
These were among the key disclosures made by Dr. Chris Offokansi, Head of Human Resources and Industrial Relations at SEEPCO, during the 2025 Annual Conference of the Association of Energy Correspondents of Nigeria (NAEC) held on Thursday in Lagos.
Delivering SEEPCO’s address on behalf of the management, Offokansi said the transition to CNG was part of the company’s broader strategy to align operations with Nigeria’s energy transition goals and global decarbonisation efforts.
“Over 90 per cent of our vehicle and equipment fleet now run on CNG. This bold shift has enabled us to achieve a 25 per cent reduction in emissions from our operations,” he said.
He added that SEEPCO had upgraded its barges and marine assets with enhanced structural safeguards to prevent water pollution and accidental spills, while expanding its environmental programmes to include robust waste management, water conservation, and tree-planting initiatives.
Offokansi, an environmental and sustainability expert, noted that the company’s progress was rooted in measurable impact rather than rhetoric.
“We measure success not only by growth, but by the positive impact we create for people, communities, and the environment,” he said.
“Our focus remains ensuring that our people thrive, our host communities feel valued, and our operations align with the highest environmental and social standards. Progress must go hand in hand with protecting human rights, advancing inclusion, and working transparently with regulators and stakeholders.”

He thanked NAEC for providing a platform for industry dialogue, adding that SEEPCO would continue to strengthen partnerships that promote innovation, sustainability, and transparency in Nigeria’s energy sector.
SEEPCO’s disclosures, anchored in quantifiable results and community inclusion, underscore what analysts describe as a decisive shift from corporate promises to practice — positioning the company as one of the indigenous leaders in Nigeria’s energy transition journey.
