The House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Flood Management and Response has lauded the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for its proactive disaster preparedness and pledged legislative support to bolster the country’s flood mitigation strategies.
Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Midala Usman Balami, who led members on a familiarization visit to NEMA headquarters in Abuja, praised the Agency’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. He assured that NEMA’s operational challenges, particularly inadequate resources, would receive urgent attention in the National Assembly.
Balami emphasized the need for stronger Local Emergency Committees and closer coordination between state and federal structures to ensure timely disaster response.
In a press statement signed by Manzo Ezekiel, NEMA’s Head of Press, Abuja, on Tuesday, the Agency’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, briefed lawmakers on NEMA’s mandate, interventions, and ongoing efforts to mitigate flood risks. She highlighted community-level engagement as a priority, stressing that “no community should be left behind in times of crisis.”

The lawmakers also toured NEMA’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), which aggregates real-time flood data and coordinates multi-agency response activities nationwide.
