President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their historic triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), awarding each of the 24 players the naira equivalent of $100,000 and members of the technical crew $50,000 each. The players were also gifted houses in recognition of their inspiring performance.
Speaking during a reception at the State House, Abuja, President Tinubu praised the team for lifting the nation’s spirits and becoming symbols of hope for millions of Nigerians, especially young girls.
“You have inspired millions, especially young girls, who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable,” he said to loud applause from the team and officials.
The President described the Falcons’ victory as more than just a sporting achievement, calling it a testament to courage, determination, discipline, and consistency.
“You inspired me too. And it’s great for a nation to have assets that are the hope of today, tomorrow, and the day after. You represent that hope. You ignited that hope. And we will continue to encourage you, the next generation, and other generations after you,” he declared.
President Tinubu also recounted the tension-filled moments of the final match, revealing how the team’s performance united Nigerians across religious, ethnic, and regional lines.

“Honestly, I didn’t want to watch the match. I didn’t want to have high blood pressure,” he said humorously. “But people came in and turned my TV to the channel. When it was over, I couldn’t be prouder.”
The ceremony ended on a celebratory note as the players, visibly elated, thanked the President for the recognition and pledged to continue making Nigeria proud on the global stage.
