The Nigeria Police Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit (EOD-CBRN) has successfully averted potential calamity on Saturday, November 22, 2024, by recovering unexploded military ordnances in Maiduguri, Borno State. The operation followed prompt reports from alert residents.
Responding swiftly, the EOD-CBRN team secured the affected areas and safely evacuated all hazardous items without any casualties or property damage.
A statement from the Force Headquarters confirmed:
> “All ordnances were safely evacuated without any loss of life, injury, or property damage, and normalcy has been restored.”
In the Dala Kacchallah area, operatives recovered six unexploded projectiles and one mortar bomb near an uncompleted building. According to reports, the items had been washed ashore by recent flooding and were abandoned by local scavengers. Similarly, a military hand grenade was discovered at the Gwange Riverbank.
The EOD-CBRN team swiftly removed the explosives, declared the areas safe, and conducted public awareness campaigns to educate residents about explosive risks.
Commending the team’s professionalism, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reassured Nigerians of the Force’s unwavering commitment to public safety. He highlighted the EOD unit’s consistent success in Borno State, noting their role in preventing numerous disasters by safely recovering improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and other ordnances.
Investigations are ongoing to trace the origins of the recovered items and to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.
The Inspector-General urged the public to avoid handling suspicious objects and to promptly report such findings to the police.
> “The Nigeria Police Force remains steadfast in its mandate to protect lives and property across Maiduguri and its environs,” the statement concluded.
