The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, on Friday marked the New Year by celebrating babies born on January 1 at public health facilities in the state, highlighting the impact of the government’s free maternal and child healthcare policy.
Dr Soludo visited the Isuaniocha Primary Healthcare Centre in Awka North Local Government Area, where a baby boy was delivered at about 6 a.m. through normal delivery. She also proceeded to the General Hospital, Enugu-Ukwu, in Njikoka Local Government Area, where a set of twins—a boy and a girl—were delivered at about 10 a.m. via caesarean section.
During the visits, the governor’s wife presented gift items to the newborns and their mothers as part of her annual New Year goodwill outreach.
Speaking to journalists, Dr Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, described the visits as a symbolic exercise to thank God for the gift of new lives and to reaffirm commitment to the future of Anambra State.
“I do this every year to reaffirm our commitment to securing a prosperous future for the state through the next generation,” she said. “Children represent divine blessings and the hope upon which the future of Anambra will be entrusted.”
She expressed excitement over testimonies from mothers who benefited from the state’s free antenatal and delivery services in public hospitals, including caesarean section deliveries provided at zero cost.
According to her, the policy, now in its third year, is part of deliberate efforts by the state government to improve maternal and child health outcomes and reduce preventable deaths.

Dr Soludo thanked God for the safe delivery of the babies and prayed that they would grow to become responsible citizens and a source of pride to Anambra State.
One of the mothers, Mrs Peace Egwu, said she received adequate care throughout her antenatal period and delivery. She expressed gratitude to the state government for the support extended to mothers and newborns, describing the free services as a major relief to families.
