Over 1,000 members of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Kano State have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging their allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
The mass defection took place on Sunday at the Fine Time Events Centre in Kano metropolis, where the former Kwankwasiyya loyalists dramatically discarded their signature red caps — the emblem of the movement — to symbolize their departure.
Led by Aminu Murtala Minjibir, the group, formerly known as Kwankwasiyya One Blood, announced its rebranding as Barau Maliya One Blood. Minjibir said their decision was driven by the visible interventions and developmental strides of President Tinubu and Senator Barau across Kano and other parts of the country.
“We are more than 1,000 in this hall, and we have members across all the 44 local government areas of Kano State. Today is a historic day in our lives as we are joining the train of success — the APC. We thank Senator Barau I. Jibrin for coming to the rescue of the people of Kano State. Positively, he has been impacting the lives of our people,” Minjibir said.
Receiving the decampees, Senator Barau hailed their defection as a wise and strategic move, describing the NNPP as a “mushroom party” with limited reach outside parts of Kano metropolis.
“We are here to receive this group of hardworking youth, comprising men and women from the Kwankwasiyya Movement, to our great party, the APC. APC is the largest party in Africa, and we are doing well in terms of human development. I see no reason why anyone will cage themselves in a small party like the NNPP,” Barau said.

The Deputy Senate President further commended President Tinubu for his unwavering support to the people of Kano and the North, urging the new members to rally behind the administration to ensure its continued success.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has never said no to any of our requests for our people in Kano and other parts of the North. He is doing a lot for us. All he needs now is our support and prayers. And with your commitment, we are going to succeed by the grace of God,” Barau added.
