Ogbonna’s Grand Reception Signals Rising Influence of APC Rallies for Unity Ahead of 2027 in Abia

AROCHUKWU/OHAFIA — A high-level rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State turned into a show of political strength and renewed unity, as businessman and grassroots politician Ifeanyi Elvis Ogbonna drew massive support at an event convened by former governor and Abia North Senator, Orji Uzor Kalu.

The gathering, held on March 13 at Camp Neya in Igbere, Kalu’s country home, brought together key stakeholders under the APC platform in what was described as a strategic move to consolidate party unity and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The event doubled as the first-quarter tripartite meeting of the OUK Movement, the Reality Organisation, and the APC—three dominant political structures in the state. Party leaders said the meeting was aimed at dispelling speculations of internal divisions following recent congresses at various levels.

Among those in attendance were Abia APC State Secretary, Chief Chidi Avajah, and former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, alongside other influential figures and support groups.

The atmosphere of the rally shifted dramatically upon the arrival of Ogbonna, popularly known as Ignes, whose entrance sparked jubilation among attendees. Supporters surged forward in excitement, chanting slogans and hailing him as a leading political figure in the constituency. Security personnel had to intervene to manage the crowd as the enthusiastic reception momentarily disrupted proceedings. The excitement continued when Ogbonna was invited to speak, drawing loud cheers from party faithful.

In his address, Ogbonna emphasised unity and loyalty within the party, aligning himself with the leadership of Senator Kalu. He commended Kalu for bringing party members together and stressed that collaboration among party structures would be critical to securing victory in future elections, a statement that resonated strongly with the audience.

Supporters and party members who spoke with journalists credited Ogbonna’s popularity to his sustained grassroots engagement and contributions to party development in Arochukwu and Ohafia. Several groups openly endorsed him as the preferred candidate for the House of Representatives seat in 2027, describing him as a consensus figure with strong political appeal across party lines.

Addressing concerns about factionalisation, Chief Avajah dismissed reports of internal rifts within the party, insisting that the APC remains united. Similarly, Chinedum Orji reaffirmed loyalty to the party’s leadership and urged members to remain focused on collective goals.

In his remarks, Kalu reiterated the need for unity and intensified mobilisation, dismissing claims of discord within the party, including alleged tensions with Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. He expressed confidence that the APC would secure electoral victories across Abia State in 2027, including delivering the state for Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The rally concluded with renewed commitments from party leaders and support groups to close ranks and strengthen mobilisation efforts.

Political observers say the event not only reaffirmed Kalu’s influence within the APC but also highlighted Ogbonna’s growing prominence, positioning him as a key contender in the party’s 2027 electoral strategy in Abia State.
