Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, has emphasized that poverty is a preventable issue in Nigeria.
He openly stated that Nigeria experiences widespread poverty due to the absence of adequate governmental measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
Speaking to the press in Abuja on Wednesday, Senator Ned Nwoko discussed the proposed National Social Security Agency Bill, aimed at addressing the societal challenges plaguing the nation.
The senator highlighted the necessity of providing essential support to the most impoverished individuals as a fundamental right that must be guaranteed.
Illustrating the prevalence of corrupt practices and obstacles facing the country, Senator Ned Nwoko pointed out the inefficiencies in the current system of submitting names for government assistance programs.
He stressed the importance of establishing a dedicated social security agency under the presidency to streamline the process and ensure transparency.
In his proposal, Senator Ned Nwoko outlined the creation of a comprehensive national database to capture detailed information about all Nigerian residents, including students, workers, disabled individuals, and children. This database would serve as a crucial tool for effective planning and resource allocation.
The National Social Security Agency Bill, once enacted, will mandate the government to prioritize social security programs and ensure the well-being of all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable populations.
Key provisions of the bill include the establishment of the National Social Security Agency to oversee social security initiatives, the implementation of a national social security database to track eligible beneficiaries, and the creation of a social security fund to finance welfare services.
