Lagos, Nigeria — The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has announced plans to overhaul operations at the nation’s seaports, with a focus on eliminating congestion and improving cargo clearance through new technology-driven systems.
The Managing Director of the authority, Abubakar Dantsoho, disclosed the initiative during an interactive session with journalists in Lagos, stating that the reforms would be anchored on the implementation of the National Single Window project and a comprehensive ports modernisation programme.
Represented by the General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Ikechukwu Onyemakara, the NPA boss said the initiative is expected to address long-standing operational bottlenecks, particularly delays in cargo clearance and persistent port congestion.
He explained that the electronic truck call-up system (ETO), introduced to ease gridlock around the Apapa axis, is currently under review ahead of the expiration of its contract. According to him, the review aims to improve efficiency and respond to stakeholder concerns.
“After the contract expires, we will conduct a review, especially in response to complaints, to improve its performance,” he said, adding that the process would be carried out in collaboration with the Truck Transit Park (TTP) to deliver a more efficient system.
Dantsoho noted that the ETO platform had already contributed significantly to streamlining logistics and improving traffic flow in port communities, particularly in Apapa.
On cargo evacuation, he stressed that the choice of transportation mode ultimately rests with port users, while the NPA remains responsible for creating an enabling environment. He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote barge operations and expand rail logistics from the APM Terminals to provide alternative cargo movement options.

The NPA chief expressed optimism that the ongoing reforms would transform Nigeria’s ports into globally competitive hubs, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
He also called on the media to strengthen its watchdog role by promoting accountability and supporting national development through responsible journalism.
