NIWRMC Aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Delivers Key Water Sector Reforms in 100 Days – Dr. Aminu-Zaria Executive Director Reveals
Targets national water security, climate resilience and sustainable resource management

The Executive Director of the Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC), Dr. Abdulmumini Aminu-Zaria, has unveiled a raft of institutional reforms and strategic partnerships achieved within his first 100 days in office, underscoring a renewed push to strengthen national water security and governance.
Presenting the milestone achievements in Abuja, Dr. Aminu-Zaria described the moment as “not just a reflection, but a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s water resources, strengthening national water security, and advancing the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
In a statement signed on Monday by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Fatimah Yusuf, the Executive Director stressed that NIWRMC occupies a central position in Nigeria’s water governance framework, with responsibilities critical to national development, environmental sustainability, food security, industrial growth and climate resilience.
Dr. Aminu-Zaria said upon assumption of office, he set out to build “a disciplined, transparent, data-driven and technologically enabled regulatory institution that is responsive to the needs of citizens, industries and the environment.”
Aligning the Commission’s direction with the Renewed Hope Agenda and with the backing of the supervising minister and management, he said immediate reforms were initiated to restore order, strengthen systems, improve efficiency, empower staff and rebuild public confidence.
Key achievements highlighted include improved staff morale through regular management and staff town hall engagements, the inauguration of a think-tank team to drive policy and institutional goals, and the revival of field and catchment offices to enhance operations across hydrological areas nationwide.
The Commission also strengthened partnerships with strategic institutions including the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Global Water Partnership Organization (GWPO), National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (OSGoF), Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) to boost collaboration, capacity building and data sharing.
Other milestones include the introduction of the PACE Agenda, Professionalism, Adeptness, Consistency and Excellence, to drive effective service delivery, an upward review of salaries for security and janitorial personnel, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kano State Water Board to deepen sub-national water governance.

“Our internal systems are stronger, our staff are motivated, our partners are more engaged, and our commitment to water governance reform is unwavering,” Dr. Aminu-Zaria said, adding that the foundation has been laid for a modern, digital and transparent regulatory body aligned with national priorities.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s long-term goal of securing Nigeria’s water future and ensuring that water resources are sustainably managed for present and future generations.
