President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Dr. Segun Osoba, a distinguished historian, activist, and scholar, on his 90th birthday, marked on January 9.
The President hailed Dr. Osoba as one of Nigeria’s finest intellectuals, celebrating his exceptional contributions to the nation’s academic and socio-political development.
A prominent figure in academia and activism, Dr. Osoba retired in 1991 from his position as a history lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. Since his retirement, he has continued to make an impact from his hometown of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.
President Tinubu praised Dr. Osoba’s dedication to expanding the boundaries of knowledge, fostering scholarship, and inspiring generations of Nigerians. He commended the historian’s unwavering advocacy for social justice, good governance, and his significant contributions to Nigeria’s constitutional development.

Dr. Osoba played a key role as a member of the committee that drafted Nigeria’s 1979 Constitution, which laid the foundation for the Second Republic. Notably, he co-authored a minority report with Dr. Yusuf Bala Usman, advocating for the removal of immunity clauses for presidents and governors and proposing a minimum age of 30 for eligibility to run for office. Although the military government rejected the report, its recommendations remain a testament to his forward-thinking vision.
President Tinubu expressed deep gratitude for Dr. Osoba’s patriotism and tireless service to the nation. He concluded by praying to God Almighty to bless the historian with many more years of good health and fulfillment.
