Nigerian’s Senate Passes ₦68.4trn 2026 Budget, Cites Legacy Obligations, Key Infrastructure Projects
The National Assembly has passed a ₦68.4 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, significantly increasing the initial proposal submitted by President Bola Tinubu in December 2025.
The approved budget represents a rise of over ₦9 trillion from the original ₦58.1 trillion Appropriation Bill, reflecting the inclusion of critical expenditures and outstanding commitments from the previous fiscal year.
Presenting the report during plenary, Chairman of the Senate Appropriation Committee, Solomon Olamilekan, explained that the upward adjustment was driven by the incorporation of 2025 legacy obligations, as well as increased allocations to key sectors.
He noted that additional provisions were made for health, the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI), the judiciary—including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court—and major infrastructure projects such as feasibility studies for the Calabar-Maiduguri corridor and the Maiduguri-Sokoto Superhighway.
The passage underscores lawmakers’ prioritisation of ongoing national commitments and strategic development initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and connectivity across the country.

Following the approval, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, commended both chambers of the National Assembly for what he described as a thorough and diligent consideration of the budget.
The 2026 appropriation now awaits presidential assent to become law.
