The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday took a decisive legislative step by introducing six new bills, all of which scaled first reading during plenary, signalling renewed momentum toward reforms in education, economic coordination, agriculture, public health, and environmental management.
Among the proposed legislations is the Gifted and Talented Centres Establishment Bill, 2026 (HB. 931), sponsored by the Senate Leader, Senator Bamidele Michael Opeyemi (Ekiti Central), aimed at institutionalising special centres to nurture exceptional talents across the country.
In a move to strengthen economic planning and intelligence, the Senate also introduced the National Economic Coordinating and Intelligence Committee Bill, 2026 (SB. 226), sponsored by Senator Daniel Olugbenga Justus (Ogun East), alongside the National Centre for Economic Management Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 851), sponsored by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan (Borno Central).
Further underscoring focus on public health and sanitation, the Veterinary Teaching Hospitals Bill, 2026 (SB. 896), sponsored by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (Borno North), and the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management (Enforcement) Bill, 2026 (SB. 988), sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South), were also presented for consideration.

Rounding off the list is the National Farmers and Agriculturists Protection Board (Establishment) Bill, 2026 (SB. 987), sponsored by Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi (Imo East), which seeks to provide institutional protection and support for farmers and agriculturists nationwide.
All six bills were read for the first time and passed without objection, clearing the way for further legislative scrutiny as the Senate continues its drive to address pressing national challenges through lawmaking.
