Nigeria, Türkiye to Implement Nine Agreements, Deepen Strategic Partnership After Tinubu’s Ankara Visit
Nigeria and Türkiye have moved to consolidate the gains of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to Ankara, with both countries agreeing to fast-track the implementation of key decisions reached by their leaders, including nine landmark bilateral agreements.
This was the focus of discussions on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, when the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, in Abuja.
Ambassador Poroy commended Nigeria for what he described as excellent coordination that ensured the success of the presidential visit, noting that the engagement had significantly deepened relations between both countries as strategic partners. He said Türkiye was keen on seeing the concrete implementation of agreements reached during the visit, which he described as a turning point in bilateral ties.

Responding, Ambassador Tuggar affirmed that the state visit was historic and had opened a new chapter in Nigeria–Türkiye relations. He highlighted the signing of nine major agreements covering areas of mutual interest, stressing that their implementation would deliver tangible benefits to the governments and people of both countries.
The foreign affairs minister also called for stronger collaboration in capacity building and training, particularly through enhanced cooperation between the Nigerian Foreign Service Academy in Ijanikin, Lagos, and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute.
Both sides further agreed on the need to establish clear channels of communication and follow-up mechanisms to ensure timely execution of agreed outcomes. To this end, they resolved to convene a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year to drive implementation and achieve targeted results in the expanding Nigeria–Türkiye partnership.
